COVID-19 Studies: Eyecare Provider and Member Surveys

Given the unprecedented nature of the COVID-19 outbreak, The Vision Council is conducting ongoing research among members and eyecare providers to get a broad understanding of how the market is reacting to tightening restrictions, consumer sentiment and government guidance.

As a part of this effort, we fielded two studies asking 100 members of different divisions and 400 eyecare providers about what changes they are experiencing in the market during the week of March 9–14, 2020. The Vision Council will continue to field these studies every week to monitor how the situation is changing in real time.

Some key insights from the studies include:

  • 42 percent of eyecare providers reported being closed to the public, with anticipated openings in April
  • 56 percent of eyecare providers reported that they reduced their staffing the week of 3/9–3/14
  • 79 percent of retailer members indicated that they are offering some form of reduced services
  • 56 percent of labs reported that they have curtailed their production hours in response
