April put its ‘game face’ on! Sports Eyewear Safety Month Resolution introduced

Earlier this month, the long-awaited Sports Eyewear Safety Month resolution was introduced, expressing support for the goals of Sports Eye Safety Month by promoting the importance of playing sports with the proper protective eyewear. A big thank you to the resolution’s sponsor, Representative Richard Hudson (R-NC).

Some highlights from the resolution:

  • April is recognized as Sports Eye Safety Month.
  • About 30,000 sports-related eye injuries, serious enough to end in a visit to the emergency room, occur each year in the United States, and the majority happen to those under the age of 18.
  • Sports and recreation activities are associated with approximately one-fourth of all pediatric eye injuries.
  • Everyday dress wear eyeglasses, sunglasses, and contact lenses do not offer adequate protection to guard against potential sports-related eye injuries, and wearing protective sports eyewear, such as safety goggles and special protective eyewear designed for specific sports, is as important as putting on other protective gear.
